Review of First Man (2018) by Martin I — 12 Oct 2018
First Man is my favorite film of the year at this point, and its hard to see anything coming close to it for me. Damien Chazelle designs his film as an experiential, direct cinema style film about a test pilot, that also felt like old Air Force test pilot training videos in perspective.
The cinematography and sound design are at the highest levels of quality to enhance upon that style. So many sequences are breathtaking. The opening sequence in particular is ingrained in my mind. The pacing of the film intensifies the anxiety and thrill the narrative produces.
Furthermore, the score from Justin Hurwitz is my favorite of the year. I'll be revisiting this one in the theaters several times over. SEE THIS IN IMAX.
