Review of First Knight (1995) by Linda L — 28 Nov 2008
I don't understand the people who don't get this movie. I think they must be so attached to "the way the Arthurian legend is supposed to be, dammit!!" that they can't see any merit in anything that doesn't match what they were expecting.
It's beautifully written, magnificently designed, and delicately acted. Despite its historical inaccuracies and anachronisims--or, more probably, because of them!--its twin messages of faith in something greater than oneself and handling one's "issues" responsibly couldn't be any better portrayed. I've watched it more times than I could count, in and out of the theater, and it's informed a lot of my own writing.
