Review of First Born (2007) by Chris M — 06 Aug 2008
I'm not known as a huge Lifetime fan. I'll watch the occasional rerun of The Golden Girls, Will and Grace, or Fraiser, but besides that, it's all the same thing over and over again. So, imagine my surprise when I wake up the other day, turn on the T.V., and discover this creepy, little gem. Sure, this is stuff we've seen before in classic genre fare such as Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, etc., but it's handled with such grace and class that it wins you over. Elizabeth Shue's performance is very good.
First Born isn't all great though. Many questions are left up in the air by the film's abrupt, but chilling ending and it's not all for the sake of being mysterious.
Despite the flaws, you'll find a beautifully shot, suspenseful, and downright creepy character study of a woman going out of her mind. This is not a typical horror movie, so if you don't like slow paced movies, I wouldn't advise you see it. The ending, while abrupt, is one of the most chilling and brave endings I've seen in years.
It's not too bad at all...for a Lifetime movie.
