Review of First Blood (1982) by Lewis E — 26 Apr 2015
Less violent than I anticipated but certainly more substance. Sort of plays out like 'Predator' but with Stallone replacing Arnie and dumb ass cops replacing dumb ass army soldiers. Joins my Action hall of fame cause of its unexpectedly sensitive direction, heated dialogue and generous helping of action.
It gets the best out of Stallone as the skilled but troubled vietnam vet who, pre-plastic surgery, can actually convey emotional facial expressions and communicate without you having to put subtitles on.
Plus it is short and sweet so contains little filler, just as most action films should be. Part of me still wishes 'First Blood' drew more blood in its graphic content but the strong message concerning the vietnam war means there is less reliance on visual popcorn fodder while also adding something extra to Rambo above merely being a bad-ass.
