Review of First Blood (1982) by Geoffrey T — 06 Jun 2010
A quote that I'm going to take from another review..."they don't make them like this anymore." I prefer this type of action movie over the CGI type action that they use today. Not only does it look more realistic, it's more well done. Using actual bombs and actual car crashes...it's not rocket science.
It's not an overly complicated movie by any means. It's infact very simple. Rambo comes to town, the sheriff doesn't like him and arrests him for no reason...and they're off! It goes to show that you don't need a great script or any great acting to make a good movie, you just have to accept what you're trying to do, and do it well. And this movie does it well. It's a pure survival story with great action sequences. One thing I wish they would have done more of was the flashbacks to Vietnam. Rambo has flashbacks to when he was a POW in the beginning...then they stop with not much of a story behind them.
Stallone does not really say all that much throughout. Except for the final scene where he breaks down about his past experineces in Vietnam. Stallone plays they part well. At first you may think that Stallone just isn't talking...but as the film goes on I started to realize that it was just part of his character. He really just didn't have much to say.
The ending was a little bit of a let down. Yeah, he breaks down, and you get to see the character more, but for some reason I just thought it was lacking a little bit. I'm not sure what I wanted in an ending, but him just walking out of the station...then the end credits? I don't know, but for some reason I wanted more I guess.
Nontheless, a great action movie that sets the bar for the old time adventure movie...it also sets the bar for the new action flick as well.
