Sylvester Stallone gets his guerrilla on in Terry Kotcheff's subversive action classic. The entire plot relies on Brian Dennehy's all-American stubbornness, but the film's reversals of its roles and genres offer an interesting spin on a traditional manhunt story.

Stallone's silent vulnerability isn't exposed until a final rant (that seriously lacks subtitles), but First Blood has enough boyish humour, shoddy-handling squad cars and all-out action to remain fun, entertaining and a little different for its humble 93 mins.

Keep your eyes peeled for that rabid boar-killing.
