Review of First Blood (1982) by Amanda C — 26 May 2010
To be honest most of my enjoyment of this film came from making associations to Son of Rambo, which is a much better film. Rambo does have its merits however. While it can probably only be watched once, its a bit of mindless fun. The plot doesn't really make sense and is mainly just an excuse to have Stallone run around in the woods and blow things up with a really, really big gun.
The most entertaining thing in the film was David Caruso, who was just as horrible an actor in the 80s as he is 30 years later. Although then he did everything with a big grin as opposed to a scowl.
The major saving grace of this film to move beyond mindless fluff is the closing scene when Rambo breaks down to Trautmen. While Stallone's annunciation is terrible and you can't understand a word he is saying, it gives the film credence to what it is supposedly trying to say about Vietnam vets and their treatment upon return to the States. Unfortunately Kotcheff then undermines this moment of credibility by following it by probably the worse piece of much to ever grace an action film.
