Review of Firewall (2006) by Roger A — 27 Aug 2009
The set-up didn?t work for me. We have a nice, admirable, upper-class family terrorized by a group of mysterious criminals. So what? Yes, I am scared for the family, but what is the point? That kind of fear is a stock and predictable response, which makes the set-up stock and predictable.
It?s neither interesting nor engaging. So the family is captured and the story question is, Who are these bad guys and what do they want? The set-up creates a crass and shallow kind of suspense. But it gets better.
The whole high-tech thing at the bank is good. But the bad guys in the house ? I don?t know. My enjoyment goes up and down. The story doesn?t build so much as it tightens and loosens its tension and thereby lurches forward.
I quit about 20 minutes in. Creeped me out. Full of suspense but has no real drama.
