Review of Firestarter (1984) by Marie-Pier D — 29 Nov 2010
With shades of "Carrie", Drew Barrymore is the child with pyrokinesis powers that manifest in her when she grows angry. Movies based on Stephen King's novels have often been hit and miss and this one is more hit than miss.
The plot is very relaxed for most of the way through, and director Mark L. Lester seems content to just let things play out. That is until the last fifteen minutes when Drew Barrymore's character unleashes the fury of her powers in an explosive climax which was really great.
Drew Barrymore's acting is OK but she makes for an interesting lead. David Keith and Martin Sheen back her up well in supporting roles, but the main acting plaudits go to the great George C. Scott as the strong, perverse and eccentric villain.
Overall, the movie definitely isn't perfect; but it's an enjoyable watch and King films have definitely been a lot worse!
