Review of Fireproof (2008) by Jeannette S — 28 Oct 2009

My husband and I finally rented this film two days following our 27th wedding anniversary, having not seen it previously, though having read rave reviews of it. It was absolutely worthwhile!

When FIREPROOF was first released, I was somewhat skeptical when I learned that Kirk Cameron had been cast as the Fire Department captain/husband. Happily, however, Kirk's baby face has matured considerably since I last saw him on a screen, so that he is actually believable in the role. And, considering that he was the only professional actor in the film--all the rest of the supporting cast and most of the film crew were volunteers from the producing church--ALL of the acting was really exceptional. (Unlike previous reviewers, I did not notice much stiffness in the acting, nor was it "terrible." In fact, I thought most was quite natural for what was being portrayed.) The editing, too, was surprisingly smooth. This film delivered plenty of emotional punch; some scenes brought us to tears, and there were some humorous ones to lighten the mood, as well.
