Review of Fireproof (2008) by Peniel T — 25 Jun 2009
The message is right on, but as is the case with a lot of Christian art (dating back to ancient times) the clarity of the message comes before the quality of the art itself. As a "movie," this isn't that good; cheesy actors, infomercial style lighting, overtly obvious moral messages, and even some technically unsound camera angles. It also felt a little bit long. But this movie serves its purpose. I can imagine struggling married couples watching this and afterward having a deep discussion on how they can fix their marriage.
But I'm hoping that more Christian filmmakers can come along and break out of the habit of making everything corny and fluffy though. I've yet to see a right on realistic depiction of Christian life in a movie, and if I have to be the first one to make a movie like that, then so be it!!!
