Review of Fired Up! (2009) by Johnny T — 23 Mar 2011
A raunchy, sex-obsessed spin on Bring It On, Fired Up has more laughs, zaniness and sexy girls in skimpy outfits that you can wave a pom-pom at. The teensploitation premise is like something a porn filmmaker from the '70s might have come up with. But Fired Up! has one added quirk: The script, credited to Freedom Jones, is a riot of tongue-twisting ironic sleaze -- it sounds like the first (and last) collaboration between Diablo Cody and Artie Lange. Who said cheerleading is just for chicks? A kind of dumb but also kind of smart-about-being-dumb comedy. It's surprisingly funny for another weak "American Pie" rip-off; Nicholas D'Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen make a hilarious pair; If you're under the age of 25 you'll like it.
VERDICT: "Rental" - (Negative to Mixed reaction). These films are only worth renting because of certain good things that are worth seeing, but are not worth paying at a theater to see due to bad things that overcome anything good.
