Review of Fire in Babylon (2011) by Steve T — 10 Jun 2011
Much more than the story of West Indian cricket's emergence as the dominant team in international cricket in the mid 70s but a cleverly interwoven story of the social and political turmoil of the time which found a focus in the islands cricket team.
The legendary Sir Vivian Richards talks with a passion about that time with contributions from many of the other legends of that era.
The cricket lover in me was enthralled with the action especially that cataclysmic Saturday evening at Old Trafford in 1976 when the veterans Close and Edrich took a fearful beating from Roberts, Holding and Co.
The film does however let itself down with some poor research - images of the Oval while Greenidge talks about a Lord's test and even worse footage from Australia when talking about a test in the Carribean. But that is just me being a nerd.
If you love cricket you must watch it. And if you don't love cricket you will be pleasantly surprised.
