Review of Finding Vivian Maier (2014) by Ryan B — 01 Apr 2014
This quite likely might end up being my favorite documentary of the year. An emotionally rich, character driven film where the subject's astonishing artistic endeavors, hidden from the public her whole life, is the mere icing on the cake of a complex portrait of a woman as elusive as her work.
Coming from a family of photographers, I felt an immediate connection to Maier and the complicated relationship an artist has to their work. The film does an effective job of capturing this predicament of exposure, balancing the conflict of both celebrating the work while respecting the artist's privacy.
