Review of Finding Neverland (2004) by Elysia M — 17 Jul 2010
Depp shines in this tragically redemptive narrative of J.M Barrie, the man who penned Peter Pan. Depp and Winslet are accompanied by rising talent Freddy Highmore who portrays the young and tortured Peter.
Everything in this movie simply clicks, the score, the beautiful cinematography - each drawing the audience deeper and deeper into the mind of an author who wants nothing more than to never grow up. While facing adult tribulations, we are carried along Barrie's journey into the bewitching Neverland. It is impossible not to sympathize with the characters we are brought to love so deeply.
It is important to note that this movie is based on the life of J.M. Barrie, though many creative liberties are taken. Time is carefully bent for the purpose of the narrative, and therefore it is necessary to acknowledge that this film is "based on true events" and not a news reel.
There are moments that will stick with you for a long time after the end credits roll - such as a fleeting moment when Barrie and his wife both simultaneously open the doors to their separate chambers. While his wife walks into the simple darkness of an unlit room, Barrie is met by the bright and exciting field of his imagination- It is because of these that FINDING NEVERLAND is truly a film that will never grow old.
