Review of Finding Dory (2016) by Yash B — 30 Dec 2016

I had a blast watching this movie. Just to get it out of the way, it's not as good as "Finding Nemo" but that really is a tall order. Even more so considering that "Finding Nemo" is my second favorite Pixar movie to date.

This movie works in a different way though. Shifting the focus to the character of Dory completely works. I was invested in the story and it kind of works like a mystery movie since Dory's memory is fragmented and you learn things about her past at the same time she does.

One thing I loved about the movie is that despite heartfelt moments, it is much funnier than its predecessor. I found myself laughing out loud for a good majority of this movie and the humor should appeal to adults and children alike.

That's not to say the movie doesn't have an emotional center because Dory's story can be a really moving and sad one in places. It's a great balance of humor and heart. The voice acting is top notch, and just like in the first and Ellen DeGeneres is fantastic.

Let's not forget that this movie also works as an adventure movie that is fast moving and entertaining because you never see what is going to happen next. It actually has a pretty thrilling finale, which surprised me but it was a pleasant surprise.

The movie has great messages about embracing who you are despite your flaws and that's something that everyone should connect with. If you go in expecting the same movie as the first, you may be let down.

However, if you know that this is a sequel that tries to be different and still tells a story full of humor, adventure, and heart, you should have a great time.
