Review of Finding Dory (2016) by Fungusgnat — 01 Aug 2016
This sequel (or prequel?) to "Finding Nemo" is even more wondrously imagined and animated, and there’s enough intelligent convo and laugh lines to keep adults entertained. If anything, Stanton & pals have taken the drama to a new level—well, the movie is still about a lost child, but Dory seems more pointed in its portrayal of juvenile angst.
In fact, parents should give some thought to whether their youngsters who are old enough to understand the plot are also old enough not to worry about it. But we adults (most of us) can take the poignancy and near-desperation that colors some scenes, and will appreciate the search for a resolution—to help Dory find ways around short-term “remembery” loss and, more generally, to cope with fear.
(In theaters, the movie is preceded by the short “Plover,” which has been highly praised for its animation but which I found rather flat, especially compared with Disney/Pixar’s previous “opening acts.
