Review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) by Silent Reaper — 02 Aug 2009
Holy shit, somebody woke up with a real axe to grind with physics. They said, "Hey, I want to make a FFVII movie, but also want it to make no sense in even FFVII's own realm of possibility." And so they did, and that movie became Advent Children.
It looks pretty sleek and from around the point Bahamut appears halfway in until the point it dies (or maybe right before the big jump that doesn't even try to make any sense) the movie is super-badass.
Rude and Reno are actually even cooler than in the game, and in that initial appearance of all of Cloud's allies, so is everyone else. But then they kind of get useless immediately after their big battle.
Nobody's really fleshed out here - I don't remember Yuffie saying anything major that didn't have to do with babbling about materia as though she has no other traits but an unhealthy obsession.
The entire first half of the movie is extremely boring, probably because it centers on Cloud, and Cloud is boring and kind of a douche. This should have been about the whole team, but they made it just about Cloud's insecurities and a poor excuse to give Sephiroth five minutes of screen time.
Overall, it looks nice and there are a couple cool - if gravity-defying - parts... but it really just adds nothing to the overall story and nothing would really be lost had it never been made.
