Review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) by Adrian Z — 26 Feb 2011
2 - Hardened fans of the video game should be pleased with this follow-up story, but expect absolutely everyone else to have their eyes glaze over once the obscure references to very hard to understand lore begins.
(I myself have casually played through half of this game before it's scope got a bit to big for me to follow, and I found it a bit of a slog throughout) Perhaps this thick lore is there to hide the fact that the film is devoid of emotion and deep characters.
So as far as story goes: fail. However, visually and aurally the film presents it's strengths. The CG animation is splendid, as is Nobuo Uematsu's score. Character and production design is wonderfully eclectic.
Some of the fight scenes, which disregard physics, are also eye popping, although the final half hour action sequence does begin to bore. From a technical standpoint, then, worth a bit of a look.
