Review of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) by Aaron R — 22 Apr 2011
For digital animation we often hold Pixar up as the benchmark for cutting edge photorealistic offerings but Square Enix, the studio that made the FF games, really shine here. The set pieces are deliriously gorgeous, the characters and their movements are breath taking and the battle sequences, whilst dizzying at times, are a knockout.
Yes, it fails in the narrative as, like with the games, the FF world gets too congested with multiple plot lines and pseudo-religious pondering to make it a winner on all fronts. The biggest misfortune this had in Australia is that it never received a cinematic release, as on the big screen this would've been mind blowing.
Either way this is worth watching for the sheer scale and audacity of the action set pieces. Will it make sense to you? Probably not but forgive it so you can see what can really be done with animation let loose in a world where anything is possible.
