Review of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) by Jesse O — 04 Jun 2011
It's interesting to read some of the reviews on Flixster because many of them seem to talk about how bad the story was... But I am in the complete opposite camp. I thought the story was pretty excellent.
Ghost spirits? Hell yes! Good plants in the writing. As an actual Final Fantasy player and true fan of Square as a company, I'm totally satisfied with the quality of this film's story. I wasn't bored once.
And even though I watched this late at night when I was tired and could have easily gone to sleep, I didn't feel like stopping it. It was too engrossing. For reals. Maybe I am biased though because about two years ago I had an idea for a film that involves invisible aliens.
Hmm...Technically, it was definitely an amazing achievement for the time, but ten years later, it feels pretty dated in terms of the animation. Emotions on the character models' faces were a bit dodgy.
Voice acting was... bad. I never want to work with the casting director of this film. Alec Baldwin? Really. Not a good choice. At all. Donald Sutherland was the best of the celebrity voices in this film followed by Steve Buscemi.
Ving Rhames... Not so much. Lots of ellipses in this review...
