Review of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) by Jesse B — 05 Jan 2018
Too much Spirit, not enough personality. The movie and story failed to excite and influence. It just didnt have enough fun and flavor for it to stand out from a typical sci- fi movie. Even after taking a long close look at the film, it still doesn't have anything particularly memorable about it.
Everything just feels average. It seems that the creators obsessed too much about trying to make everything look and feel super realistic and believable in the meantime they lost the artistic appeal. It's like when a sketch artist tries to trace a photograph of a human being using only pencil, even if they get it 99.
9% accurate, it looses the magic and appeal of being art. There needs to be more to animation than just realism. This movie didnt take the risk, they didnt go the extra mile with things like style, creativity, charisma, cheer, pomp, culture charm, instead it all just felt too melancholy and stoic.
The tone just kills the mood of the viewer, and yet the tone never changes. A good movie takes you up and down emotionally with parts in between, this story just seemed to linger in the solemn. What a, epic waste, but still definitely not the worst of its kind.
