Review of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) by Rowan C — 12 Jun 2010
I don't think of this as a video game adaption. I just think of it as it's own film with mildly and very loosely connected with the game series.
This movie itself feels like a game with the brilliant animation and in my opinion good story. It feels like I'm playing Half-Life crossed with Halo.
The story of the film is very interesting and I think the reason why barely anyone liked this back in 2001 is because nobody was yet ready for a film like this. If this had been made in 2010 not only would it most obviously have even more better graphics and animations but it would have had better reviews and a better box office in my opinion. I think the characters are pretty good and 3D (in character not animation). They are suprisingly not stereotypes except for a few obvious glitches in the characters. Sometimes you actually care for the characters and their relationships. The music is very good. As there is always a "bad guy" in mostly any film this one has one too. He is just another Human being who has had his family killed by the "Spirits" and just wants the spirits dead. He is just driven by rage and you can sometimes actually agree with what he is trying to do but sometimes you just cringe and want him to listen to what others are saying.
My overall conclusion I guess is not to think of this film as a game adaption but just as movie. If I were to see what film this is like then a cross between The Matrix and a dark Star Wars film where the Sith actually won and destroyed everything in their path.
