Review of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) by Lee B — 23 May 2011
I know this film is 10 years old now, but ive just revisited it and now I fancy writing about it!
Visually it is amazing, and with all the 3D hoo-ha now this film is perfect to be converted, I reckon its totally do-able too, but probably wouldnt make the funds back to make it worthwhile.
The huge problem with this is that it doesnt make sense! Something about phantoms (ghosts) crash landing on our planet, killing us all over a period of 34 years while we desperately try to find weapons to destroy them. Our heroine (Aki) is more interested in understanding them, (and here comes the non-sensical part) by finding 8 spirits across the planet, combining them and doing something (?????) that will make it all better again....erm, wtf?!
By the end, did we win? Dunno? The bad spirits turned blue, im not sure why, Aki's boyfriend dies while doing something heroic (not sure why he had to do it), and some people smile.....think we won.
Great song over the end creidts (on while im typing this now) is probably one of the highlights overall.
Performance capture wise this is on a par with the films of today (Xmas Carol, Beowulf, etc) so just goes to show how ahead it was back then.
Great to look at, not so great to watch if that makes sense.
However........i surprisingly enjoyed this quite a lot, as silly as it is, the characters and relationships just work.
