Review of Final Destination 3 (2006) by Maximus D — 19 Jun 2011
We get it by now, you can't cheat death. At least that is what Final Destination wants us to think. Final Destination 3 is probably the series' natural conclusion in that after three films that are damn near identical, surely the series can only become a parody of itself? As the series has gone on it has already shown that it is less about genuine tension or scares, and more about elaborate, over the top and often daft death scenes.
Apparently also this was a victim of American test audiences, much like the first Final Destination, seemingly unable to cope with the original ending, the filmmakers were forced to add more gore and random nonsense, rather than what I assume was a far less bleak way to end the tale. In fact (spoiler alert for those who care) the original film had found a way you COULD cheat death, by creating life, it's a shame the series hasn't touched on that again since. Instead preferring more and more bizarre deaths.
I still found Final Destination 3 to be thoroughly entertaining, it just lacks the atmosphere and tension that made the original so good. Over the top violence is the order of the day here, no more no less.
