Review of Final Destination (2000) by David N — 22 Dec 2011
Final Destination was a compelling and engaging thriller about the supernatural. It dealt with its subject matter - Death - in a dark, intricate, and terrifyingly suspenseful manner. I thoroughly enjoyed its original plot and the way it was handled, and have no doubts whatsoever that this is the finest in its franchise.
It seems and really is superior in every imaginable way to its more than terrible sequels, but overall, I would also say that it too had some weaknesses. The main defect in it was, I think, that it was too macabre and morbid in its subject matter.
The death scenes were assuredly frightening alright, but in other respects, the plot seemed to drag on and on without any possible end in sight. Having said that, I must say that this was thoroughly refreshing and engaging, and I was genuinely frightened after seeing it.
But I firmly think that it could have been much better.
