Review of Final Destination (2000) by Jack L — 25 Jun 2010
I watched this and all three others over 2 days and will probably be reviewing the others some time soon.
SPOILER ALERT...
The basic plot of this film revolves around Alex a teenager who while on a trip to France predicts that the plane will crash and everyone will die. Due to this vision he disembarks from the plane along with 5 other students and a teacher. The plane explodes and kills everyone inside it.
Alex then starts having visions of how each of the survivors will die due to his having interfered with Death's plan.
They all die very gruesome deaths in which Death itself seemingly interferes.
It ends with Alex and one other student seemingly winning against death and surviving.
But the events on the second film prove that they are hardly immune to Death!
The direction of this film was boring and could and should of been much more subtle. The attempts at creating a dark and threatening atmosphere were totally wasted.
The acting was just BAD, every element of the cast was unsuited for the roles. The teenagers all did a pathetic job but I expected the older actors to make up for it, I was disappointed.
The characters were nothing exceptional, just pretty boring and mediocre American teenagers, in fact Death was the most interesting character even though you never see it!
The plot was somewhat original but poorly executed, the idea that Death itself was the "villain" was original but not exactly to my liking. Not much is explained, the reasons and the motives of Death are all semi-explained which is just confusing, also the fact that Alex has visions is never explained.
The gruesome deaths were amusing but way too complicated and unlikely to be believable even in the slightest.
The characters often did stupid and unexplained things just to suit the purposes of the plot.
The dialogue was pretty pathetic but mostly it was just badly delivered by the actors. (I saw this film in French so I can't add much more I'm afraid).
The soundtrack was pretty unremarkable even though I thought it could have added much more to the overall atmosphere.
Overall this is a pretty crap horror film, that isn't scary in the least but does contain some amusing deaths.
Not recommended especially if you are a Horror fan, but if you want to watch various people get killed in complicated ways by Death itself then it might be worth a watch.
Cinematography 2/10.
Acting 0/10.
Plot 5/10.
Screenplay 3/10.
Soundtrack 2/10.
