Review of Final Destination 2 (2003) by Brandan W — 16 Jan 2011
Final destination 2 is one of the best horror movies of the decade, and a superior sequal to the first, the freeway pile up alone is one of the most astonishingly orchestrated car smash- ups ever filmed, it's insane and huge and constantly freezeframable (i've watched it like three dozen times) what was expected to be a cheap cash in on the first film goes way beyond it in terms of inventive death and destruction within the first 10 mins, it's awesome! fd2 is more lean and creative and ambitious in its wanton insanity and cartoonish nastiness than the first, it's also a lot more fun, playing out, sometimes, like a horror version of it's a mad, mad, mad world with it's various characters running around everywere trying to prevent and alter deaths plans.
In an ingenious asidel that subverts the slasher film the best a film has since scream, the ominous cliches and dark ironies that you usualy find in such a film are used as a plot point to be reconished and looked out for as sighns by the characters to warn them of whats coming next.
Add to that some incredible, shocking death scenes with great set pieces and even a solid script and likable characters (unusal for this kind of film) who arnt you typical batch of teens but adults (and a kid who, in a bold move, shockingly bites the dust!)and you've got a brilliantly entertainig and superior splatter flick for a night in with lots of beers.
One of my personal favs in fact.
