Review of Final Cut (1993) by Joshua D — 04 May 2014
Okay so my opinion might be just as varied as the reviews. First off, I did enjoy this. Williams has always given powerful but realistic dramatic acts to films and that is a strong benefit here. The plot seems secondary to the world and character, which I actually appreciate. Morals of the story seem to include.
1. Just doing what you want in life, even if it's wrong.
2. Acting better for the benefit of yourself and others, because they may remember you after they've gone.
3. Life for yourself, instead of using tv, books and work to escape it.
So I rather enjoyed the messages being sent in this film. I approve of the implant actually, but can see the problem with selectively cutting memories. The film has some problems in that it doesn't really live out the story arc for Williams, except possibly for his memories of another to make an impact on the lives of more people. Also the "code" of the cutters is a little misleading. It should be more cooperate like, more of a set of regulations and contractual obligations. So besides those points I did enjoy this film, it's like the mass effect games where the build up is better than the pay off, and that's the most noticeable flaw.
