Review of Filth (2013) by Ian C — 29 Jan 2014
Welsh's novel is one of my all time favorites and the flick was never going to live up to those expectations. It is also not wise to compare a book to film but when you build up the image of a character in your head it is impossible not to have some preconceptions when you watch it. D.I Bruce Robertson is probably my all time favorite fictional characters. The man is a racist idiot with an even shittier taste in music than Patrick Bateman. This is what made him so funny in the book; his love for Curtis Stigers, 80's cock rock bands and his comparisons between Michael Bolton to Soul greats is what made him so funny. This is all completely ignored in Jon S. Baird's film.
Anyway back to the film. It is highly enjoyable. The photocopier gag works very well, McAvoy is excellent and to a degree pulls it off but due to the script at hand he is not racist or sleazy enough, and the shrink as a substitute doesn't really work and the ending is a bit of a letdown.
