Review of Filth (2013) by Samarth K — 09 Aug 2014
Filth is a disgusting, dingy and justified in its application.
I have not frequented the pages of its literary form, so please understand I speak purely of the film adaption. Bruce is a very complex character, being both despised and pitied. Laughed at and gasped at. Yet the brilliance of the character is that every action is traceable. This is not a needless "shock film" nor trying to get cheap reactions from the audience. We are rightly shown the consequences of Bruce's "life" and the ultimate conclusions.
With a great cast, brilliant lead performance of McAvoy and filmed largely on location. Filth is a story about a man, who for all intents and purposes we should despise. Yet we leave the film feeling a mixed sense of pity and uncomfortable understanding.
I could not recommend this movie anymore. A must watch Scottish film.
