I cannot understand the rave reviews for this movie. Jamie Bell is good, as he always is but l am struggling for positives after that. The script is flat, the drama feels contrived and the characters are cardboard cut outs.

Everyone in Liverpool is warm hearted and loveable despite life's ups and downs- you get the picture. Surprisingly none of them can crack a decent joke spoiling an otherwise magnificent portrayal of stereotypes.

The other notable features are an obtrusive and ill chosen sound track and a seemingly endless display of appalling wallpaper. I don't remember 1981 being so terrible in that respect.
