Review of Film Geek (2005) by Britta K — 16 Aug 2007
A little painful to watch because I could relate to the socially inept main character in a number of ways. I think Film Geek is best enjoyed if you just know you can find a little bit of yourself in this horny video store clerk with an encyclopedic knowledge of films, or have experienced similar scenarios in real life. Otherwise, you might just write this off as a cheap, sad, low-budget movie with too many masturbatory scenes.
I thought it was rather honest and accurate in portraying the awkwardness of such a character, and it had me laughing quite a bit. But I also found myself pitying him at the same time, so it's an uncomfortable kind of laughter. Since I'm sucker for movies featuring awkward, socially inept characters who are sexually frustrated, I must say this was enjoyable to a certain point.
I think the film was great until it reaches that ending, which I must say, doesn't seem to be grounded in reality, despite its feel-good intentions.
