Review of Fighting (2009) by Thomas W — 06 Oct 2009
Ugh ... what was the point of this movie? I cannot even think of one thing that would make me recommend this to anybody -- the title is even bad: "Fighting." The title of the film is just as unoriginal and/or uninspired as the movie itself.
Channing Tatum (who has a cool name) has popped up on the Hollywood scene these last few years and has proven that he has the ability to act (in both Public Enemies and the underrated A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) although the majority of his films are craptastic (like this one) which require no talent or skill whatsoever (G.
I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Supercross, Havoc, Step-Up [1 & 2], and the overrated, movie-with-potential War of the Worlds). The once-promising, Oscar nominated Terrence Howard tried to act himself out of this movie; but he wasn't successful because the movie itself was so bad (it makes me sad that he may never have another Hustle & Flow and after being turned down for the Iron Man sequel his film career seems to be going downhill).
Fighting isn't one of the "worst films of the year" but nothing about it is even remotely good or decent. It is one of those films that you can watch and stomach but you wonder "why did I watch this?" The dialogue is lame and many of the situations are just pointless.
The "smalltalk" between the characters sounds written and the movie just pointlessly meanders from one fight to the next. Who'd write this; who'd sign up to star in it; who'd okay millions of dollars to finance it etc.
etc. etc.?
