Review of Fighting (2009) by Luke R — 09 Jan 2010
Whilst I didn't dislike this film, it was a bit of a disappointment and did not live up to my expectations.
I am a fan of Terrence Howard and have really like some of this work (such as Iron Man). I've also enjoyed the work of Channing Tatum (including Step Up, Stop-Loss, Coach Carter etc) - so I thought the pairing of these two would be an excellent combination.
I just felt this movie was a bit clumsy. Tatum and Howard were solid, but not outstanding and I wouldn't say they were at their best here.
The fight scenes were executed quite well, but I thought the "venues" were a bit unbelievable at times. Maybe this stuff really happens in NYC (and America in general) but if it does, I don't think it would happen as it is portrayed in this movie.
I thought we also could have seen Tatum (Shawn MacArthur in the film) "build up" to the fights a bit more. As it was shown in the movie, he was simply plucked off the street based on one incident alone but I would have liked Tatum to show his wares a bit more to really demonstrate his fighting skills. Again, just a bit clumsy and not well thought through by the writers in my opinion.
This is not a bad movie (just above "average"), but it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. I'd still say give it a watch but don't expect miracles.
