Review of Fighting (2009) by Ewoudt C — 15 Sep 2010
The biggest surprise concerning 'Fighting' is that, despite its unoriginality, predictability and genre cliches, it remains surprisingly watchable and dare I say it, even entertaining to a large degree.
Lead Channing Tatum is believable as a below-average LSM community member that decides it could be a good idea to make a living as a person who gets beat up for a living. Terence Howard guarantees the movie some needed star-appeal, while the rest of the ensemble cast imbues the very realistic depiction of Brooklyn with a true sense of authenticity and charm, helping to give the movie's water-downed plot a significant boost.
In a surprising twist for the genre, the movie focuses much less on the actual fight scenes, instead shifting attention to the emotional development of the lead. This gives 'Fighting' a interesting quality (maybe unintended) as a mix between hard-hitting drama and mainstream appeal.
