Review of Fight Club (1999) by Matty M — 21 Aug 2013
I've probably watched this film 100 times since it was released. Based on the 1997 novel by Chuck Palahniuk, a chance meeting between an office employee and a charismatic soap salesman leads them to form a secret fight club in order to vent everyday life frustrations. Despite its initial appeal, the soap salesman (Brad Pitt) begins to go to more extreme measures for the ultimate high. Before long they are blowing up buildings, causing car crashes and vandalising everything in sight. But there is a massive twist at the end that will knock you for six.
Just everything about this film is spot on. Its well casted (could there have been better choices for the two leads?), well acted, well directed, well scripted and even though its 2hrs plus in length, it not point does it drag. Even Palahniuk himself admitted he thought the film was better than the book. You can't give it much higher praise than that, can you?
