Review of Fight Club (1999) by Simon H — 07 Jul 2014
Fight Club is an interesting film and very different to what you usually see. Don't be fooled by a lot of the media advertising it as a fighting film as this is just a very small section of the full film. It is more of a physiological drama than anything else.
Firstly, I must praise the acting. Everybody from Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter to Jared Leto and a surprising Meatloaf each bring out a unique character. The film showcases, in my opinion, one of Bonham Carter's best roles.
What I like about the film is the interesting filmmaking style Fincher has chosen. The film consists with Edward Norton's character narrating throughout and involves different editing techniques that are best finding out firsthand.
Unfortunately, Fight Club is one of those films that the twist is well known for a lot of people who have not seen the film. If you are unaware of the twist, then you are in for a surprise. If you are aware of the twist then you are still in for a surprise as there is a lot more depth to the characters to be unearthed once you reach that point. The film concludes with an ending which is unexpected and different to similar twists.
Fight Club is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously but doesn't find itself going over the top. It is really is a unique viewing experience which is evident of why it features in many top 10 lists.
