Review of Fight Club (1999) by Rick L — 05 Sep 2015
I used to enthusiastically love this film when I first saw it years ago, but now it doesn't excite me as much. It's still a very good film, but it's not Fincher's best, and yet lesser David Fincher is still a hell of a lot better than a lot of cinema we get these days.
The visuals, soundtrack, editing, and performances are all stellar and unique. But the middle section drags a bit, becoming a tad too repetitive, and the film as a whole is rather cold. Fortunately, the final 45 minutes pick up the pace and it ends on such a darkly beautiful note, with one of the most memorable final shots I've ever seen.
Also, Helena Bonham Carter deserved an Oscar nomination for this, she's a true original here.
