Review of Fight Club (1999) by Larry P — 19 Jul 2014
Not only is the film visually stunning, it is also thought-provoking, funny and entertaining Unconventional, with a great twist at the end, and even after you know it, the movie can still keep you on the edge of your seat for subsequent viewings.
Much has been made of the violence of this movie; there is blood and violence in the movie, but it is not excessive and it serves the plot well. Norton's character, the narrator, whose name is never revealed during the film (an example of the filmmaker's subtlety), lacks a sense of identity, as metaphor for how disillusioned and materialistic society has become.
Though you (hopefully) don't relate to blowing up your own apartment or starting a secret fight club in the basement of a bar this movie challenges the viewer reflect on their own life. Because underneath the satire and violence is nested essential existential questions.
