Review of Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) by Matt H — 15 Sep 2015

Not the disaster I was expecting, and surprisingly well directed, but there's still no story here, or characters made of anything other than cardboard. The sex scenes are standard Cinemax softcore stuff.

I guess the aspect of the movie that stands out the most is this is fantasy porn for women, and made for the female perspective, which is in itself sort of rare. Fifty Shades of Grey is the male equivalent of all of the movies that regular dudes get a highly beautiful or interesting woman interested in them as a matter of routine.

I guess the movie gets points for not being the norm, but that's about all I can positively say about it besides being competently directed and being a merely meh movie. The two main characters are both terribly boring, and as there's very little plot or story to speak of, it makes for a very plodding "character piece.
