Review of Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) by Gloria M — 05 Jul 2015
The cream, the white, the off-white, the bone, or the 50 shades of beige. A dully loyal and flaccid continuance of the books hype, the woefully inflated first 50 Shades franchise instalment is limp, failing to stimulate.
The 50 Shades formula spired from water cooler lore of naïve girl meets.
Emotionally unavailable boy, fixing his woes while embracing her own somewhat risqué sexual proclivities, needs little plot description or reiterations.
Congratulations on a valiant effort by Dakota Johnson to capture the naivety one Miss Anastasia Steele, however Jamie Dornan's incomparable Mr Christian Grey was simply laughable. Lacking the strength or commanding presence the character demanded, shame on you Mr. Hunnam for pulling out.
The film also does little justice for the practice of BDSM. The timidly explored and misconstrued 'red room of pain' was meekly translated.
The Verdict: Vanilla.
