Review of Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) by Ethan P — 13 Dec 2015
Probably received low ratings because subject matter embarrassed theatre goers. Seen on the small screen the movie can be better appreciated. Dakota Johnson pulls off a bravura performance. It's very suttle and most viewers probably miss the fact that Ana is in charge most of the time. Sure Christian 'looks' in charge, but consider -He never leeps with anyone - yet the first t2 times with Ana he sleeps with her. Christian NEVER makes love - he F--cks, yet the first time with Ana he makes love. Everything he says he never does, he does with Ana. She brings out in him the hidden desire for love. In the opening 'interview' she challenges him on every point and forces him to examine his positions. She frustrates him at every turn. Finally when the ten minutes alloted for the interview are up, he cancels the next interview to spend more time with her.
Dakota nails every facial expression and nuance of the script to perfection. Her performance is extremely demanding for a young woman, haveing to appear nude and show an intimate side of herself that few actresses could do.
I salute her for her near perfect timing and gracious efforts.
