Review of Fifty Shades Darker (2017) by Jamie K — 15 Feb 2017
Much, MUCH better than the first one. Christian actually shows why he is how he is, and how he's changing. But those who didn't read the books and only saw the first movie may be confused by the large growth in character between this and the first - the first didn't show much growth from the book at all... so if you just saw the first movie, that may be a surprise.
Some plot points from the book are removed, but it doesn't detract from the film - in some cases, it even makes the emotional turmoil for Anastasia more powerful.
If you're a fan of this series, especially if you found the first one lacking (as I did, though I can enjoy it for what it is now and not what I feel it should have been) then you'll most likely love this movie.
Given the success of this, even for those that don't care for the genre or subject matter, here's hoping that this sets a precedent (one partially started in the "Twilight" saga) for more studios take the chance of giving the author control of the movie adaptations. The DCEU, for instance, could have certainly benefited from not thumbing it's nose at the source material.
So, from one fan to another - go see it. My wife and I both loved it!
