Review of Fifty Dead Men Walking (2008) by Keith S — 13 Apr 2009
Although this film didn't really break any new ground, it was impressive to see this calibre of production not dumbing down any of the circumstances or issues - although I can't of course attest to the veracity of the story itself - and even more impressive that it managed not to demonise or lionise either side of the conflict.
Furthermore, the film didn't water itself down with some kind of insipid, can't we all just get along dribble, which may well be true and has its place, but not in this particular story. The performances were all spot on and the direction sharp enough to repeatedly shift the focus up and down between the specific characters and the movie's broader themes.
The period detail was also all spot on. I have to admit to expecting something like Patriot Games, The Devil's Own or Blown Away (all of which are utter dreck) and was pleasantly surprised.
