Review of Fierce Creatures (1997) by Clay B — 27 Jul 2011
A wildly funny sex farce that smartly combines big-time silliness with sophisticated wit. The real fun here comes from watching Mr. Kline bounding through two archly good performances, Mr. Cleese coming hilariously unstrung in the presence of Ms. Curtis and all those adorable animals. Chock full of wacky misunderstandings and bawdy innuendo, Fierce Creatures is certainly a fitting follow-up to 1988's A Fish Called Wanda. Fierce Creatures generally comes off as an agreeable, sporadically hilarious farce that benefits substantially from Cleese, Curtis, and Kline's incredibly strong work (the latter, playing two roles, is particularly effective here). Fierce Creatures, directed by Robert Young and Fred Schepisi, is a rollercoaster ride of comic pranks.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
