Review of Field of Lost Shoes (2015) by Michael P — 19 Mar 2015
This film tries very hard to portray a story sympathetic to Confederate soldiers while doing its very best to condemn what they were fighting for. And it fails miserably. The film makers go to great pains to say slavery is wrong and have the characters say and do things that no southerner would ever do.
(Slavery is bad, we must intervene to save the slave baker who's about to be hanged for stealing the bread that we stole). And in the one place where a Confederate flag would be appropriate--in the portrayal of a Civil War battle--it's nowhere to be seen.
It's one thing to be blatantly racist, but this movie sanitizes the VMI cadets beyond recognition.
