Review of Field of Dreams (1989) by Ben F — 16 Oct 2010
I think it could be easily debated...but in my opinion..after seeing this movie constantly in my childhood, and going back to watch it one more time the other day...I must say..."Field of Dreams" could be the best baseball movie ever made. It's one of the most remarkable and touching movies I have ever seen. It's style is so creative, and tingling, that it's hard to turn off the film and not think about it for a while. It has left an effect on me that I will not soon forget. This movie is amazing.
As soon as the film starts, there is nothing more important than the soundtrack. James Horner gives us one of the best compositions of his entire career, asking us to pay attention, to see what is going on. Throughout the whole film, his soundtrack allows us to stay enthralled and completely drawn to the emotions and styles of the movie. He did a brilliant job. Kevin Costner is asked to build a baseball field. For reasons that we don't know. He does it anyway, and soon, the spirits of deceased baseball players start to play ball on the field that he has created. A strange voice in the mist told him to do it...and that's his motive. The imagination that this movie gives to the viewer is something to awe about. I just can't get over how remarkable this movie is. If you build it...he will come.
The performances in the movie are amazing. Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster are all brilliant from start to finish. All of their performances mix together in a way that I can't begin to describe. The feelings that you get when Lancaster or Jones are talking are just amazing. The story behind the movie allows us to believe in everything that is going on, and the amazing performances allow us to stay believing.
Behind the amazing script, acting, and soundtrack, the overall message of the film, is that one place can make all your dreams come true. One thing that is so brilliant about this movie, and it's something that the common movie-goer might not notice, is that every character has a dream which they want to come true. And every character has that dream fulfilled, because of Costner's ball-field. This concept is so touching, and heart-wrenching, that you just have to watch the movie to know what I'm talking about.
The ending to this movie, is one of the most heartfelt sequences in all of cinema. I'm not going to give it away, but I was in complete tears. It's one of the greatest moments in Hollywood history, and it's very underrated.
"Field of Dreams" is a godly movie in so many ways. It makes us believe things that aren't possible, the performances are amazing, the soundtrack is indescribable..and it's message is so human and so close to the heart. It's a masterpiece...but a modern masterpiece. It's hard so say the word masterpiece when Kevin Costner is wearing Jeans...but nonetheless..the movie really is a masterpiece. Do yourself a favor...watch it.
