Review of Field of Dreams (1989) by Joel S — 28 Oct 2010
What begins as a surreal and mystical journey down baseball's memory lane, turns into one of the most moving father/son movies of all time. The genius of this movie is how it subtly builds up to the emotional climax.
It takes something that could have been very predictable and seemingly turns it into a surprise. Kinsella's writing brilliance keeps the film moving a long as do great cameos by James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster.
Costner does a believable job as the protagonist. The rest of the cast doesn't get in the way of arguably the greatest baseball film of all time. It's greatness comes from leaving the viewer with the question "Was this movie about baseball or about life?".
