Review of Field of Dreams (1989) by David F — 30 Mar 2014
There is so much Americana crammed into this beautiful film I don't know where to begin. It's about farming, baseball, road trips, the 60s, Berkeley, and family. James Earl Jones is great as that distinctive American novelist type the reclusive Terence Mann, who gave up a life of activism after writing a brilliant novel and who's always nursed a baseball dream.
Baseball dreaming unites all the characters in this film, disparate as they are. Beautiful midwestern scenery, small towns, and an aching, Coplandesque score help to make this one of the greatest studio pictures from the 1980s.
